What is a neck lift surgery?

With aging, the neck tends to develop deep creases, excess/drooping skin, and muscle bending due to excess fat. Jaws can also start to droop, causing a double chin appearance, also known as turkey wattle. Contouring the neck can help in producing a more defined jawline, which would take years off one’s appearance. This is often done through a procedure called a neck lift, also referred to as platysmaplasty or cervicoplasty.

A neck lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that enhances neck appearance by correcting any sagging and excess fat deposits in the neck area because of aging, heredity, or sun damage. This is achieved by the removal of excess fat and skin from the neck and jawline, thus giving a rejuvenated appearance with a more young-looking neck.

Depending on the patient’s concerns and insecurities regarding their neck, a neck lift surgery can be combined with other procedures such as liposuction and can be done as part of a face-lift, and that is referred to as lower rhytidectomy. In the case of structural imperfections in the neck, the patient can get them corrected through fat transfer, botox injections, or implant placement.

Who are suitable candidates for neck lift surgery?

Good candidates for a neck lift are people seeking to get a slender neck, which in turn defines the jawline. Other good candidates include people with excess skin and fat in the neck area that engenders the development of folds and lines and who are generally healthy and with realistic expectations.

For a better rejuvenation appearence results, neck lift can be associated with other face surgery such as face lift, temporal lift, bichectomy, and  blepharoplasty.

How is neck lift surgery performed?

Before neck lift surgery

During the initial consultation, our partner surgeon will evaluate the patient’s health status and discuss surgical goals and expectations. In addition, they will examine and measures the patient’s face and take photographs for documentation purposes. Later, the surgeon will decide on the surgical method that is most appropriate to the patient’s case.

During neck lift surgery

A neck lift is done under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The surgeon starts by making incisions under the chin and/or behind the ears depending on the technique chosen. Then, they tighten the platysma muscle and suture it together in a shoelace way. After that, they trim away the excess skin and fat carefully repositioning and securing the tissue and skin with sutures. Finally, the surgeon closes the incisions and places a drain on the wounds before they are bandaged. Often times, a separate incision under the chin is required for liposuction of the area and for muscle correction.

Post-operative effects & recovery after neck lifting surgery

Swelling and bruising are common after neck-lift surgery. The patient might need to wear a special garment, which compresses the neck and helps in reducing swelling. The patient also needs to keep the head elevated above the heart and keep it straight. Twisting and bending the neck is to be avoided. The patient will be given instructions to properly care for the surgical site, which includes avoiding excessive force or motion and not wearing clothing that goes over the neck. Applying ice on the neck is to be avoided, as this can compromise blood flow.

Results of neck lifting surgery

It might take several weeks to months for swelling and bruising to subside completely and up to six months for incision lines to fade away. After that, the improvements of a neck lift become more visible and prominent. The final neck lift result should not only provide a more youthful and rested appearance but also help the patient feel more confident.
