Genioplasty : chin plastic surgery

Genioplasty: what is a chin plastic surgery?

Plastic surgeons have long affirmed that the lower third of the face ─composed of the jaw and the chin─ is so significant that it determines the overall facial appearance. Therefore, genioplasty is believed to drastically alter facial proportions by correcting chin-related deformities and imperfections. The procedure also balances facial features and improves facial symmetry.

Genioplasty, also known as chin surgery, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the chin and modifies its size and morphology to remedy chin-related imperfections. Two types of defects are dealt with in genioplasty:

  • Retrogenia (also known as receding chin): this defect is usually hereditary in nature. It is a condition wherein the lower jaw is somewhat smaller in comparison to the upper jaw. The latter causes the chin to recede backward and the face to appear flattered.
  • Prognathism (also known as salient chin): a chin is protruding or salient if the lower jaw sticks farther than the upper jaw. The latter gives the chin an unaesthetically narrow appearance.

Genioplasty & other procedures:

Chin plastic surgery is often performed in conjunction with corrective jaw surgery, liposuction, rhinoplasty or fat grafting. The latter depends on the patient’s medical case and desired outcome.

  • Corrective jaw surgery is performed to correct jaw alignment
  • Liposuction is performed to suction excess fat in the chin
  • Rhinoplasty is performed to achieve symmetry between the nose and the chin
  • Fat grafting (or also implant placement) is performed to correct a receding chin

How is genioplasty performed?

Before chin surgery:

During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will conduct a medical check-up, a blood test, and a morphological analysis of the patient’s face. The analysis will be based on cephalometric and soft tissue evaluations. In addition, the surgeon will determine whether the patient fulfils the criteria of good candidacy or not. It is also important that the surgeon discusses with the patient their expectations, motivations, and desired outcome. Based on that discussion, the surgeon will decide on the genioplasty procedure that is most adapted to the patient’s needs.

During chin surgery:

Chin surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts for one to two hours depending on the extent of surgery. Two types of chin surgeries can be performed; each of which depend on the patient’s medical case and chin defect:

  • Chin reduction surgery: the surgeon starts by cutting the chin bone, then moving it into a new position using small screws to hold the chin bone in place. Once completed, the surgeon proceeds to suturing the gum with stitches. This procedure is usually performed on people who suffer from severe retrogenia or salient chins.
  • Chin augmentation surgery: this procedure involves using fat grafting, cartilage grafting, or chin implants to augment or push forward a small or receding chin. Other non-surgical interventions for chin augmentation may be considered, like using botox fillers.

Regardless of the type of chin surgery, the intervention is carried out inside the mouth, thus concealing any post-operational scarring. The surgeon will conclude each chin surgery by placing a bandage on the operated area.

Post-operative effects & recovery after chin plastic surgery

Genioplasty is not a particularly painful procedure; however, the surgeon will prescribe the appropriate medication as the patient might experience pain in the chin area during the days following surgery. Swelling is expected after surgery, but it will completely vanish after a few weeks. The patient is nevertheless advised to use ice packs on bruised and painful areas. The surgeon will recommend that the patient follow a strict liquid and soft-food diet for a few days after the genioplasty procedure. In addition, it is a must to take a week off after surgery to encourage proper and quick healing. Finally, the patient has to maintain good oral hygiene by rinsing their mouths and brushing their teeth regularly.
