Lip reduction : plastic surgery to reduce the volume of the lips

Lip-reduction surgery: what is it?

Lip surgery has gained tremendous fame during the last decade thanks to increasing demands; mainly influenced by social media trends. While lip augmentation surgery was extensively requested to achieve an Angelina Jolie full lip effect, nowadays lip-reduction surgery emerged enabling both men and women to get refined and thinner lips. Although lip-reduction has been solely recognized among plastic surgeons and ex-patients, it is nowadays considered a rising trend in the world of facial plastic surgery.

Lip reduction, also known as reduction cheiloplasty, aims at reducing the size and volume of the lower and/or the upper lip by removing skin tissues and excess fat. The objective of lip reduction surgery is to obtain thinner lips that are in perfect harmony with the patient’s facial structure.

Good candidates for lips reduction plastic surgery:

Lip-reduction surgery is destined for people who have genetically large lips and wish to reduce their size or volume. Other candidates who may be considered for a lip reduction are ex-patients of lip-augmentation surgery who are unsatisfied with the results. More importantly, candidates should be in good overall health. Indeed, the patient has to be free of any pre-existing medical condition that may present a contraindication to the surgery. Finally, the patient has to set realistic expectations and be aware of possible risks and complications to the surgery.

How is lip-reduction surgery performed?

Before lip surgery:

A pre-surgical consultation with both the surgeon and the anaesthetist is important to set the objectives of the procedure, determine the patient’s psychological readiness, and review his/her medical history. To check criteria of good candidacy for lip reduction surgery, the surgeon will conduct a complete medical check-up and a lip examination to evaluate the patient’s lip tissues. The surgeon will also discuss with the patient their motivations, expectations, and desired outcome of the procedure. Finally, it is important that the patient inform their surgeon of any on-going treatments and medication they are taking to avoid possible contraindications to the reduction cheiloplasty surgery.

During lip surgery:

The cheiloplasty procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anaesthesia, and is expected to last for fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on the amount of skin tissue and fat to remove.

The surgeon starts by creating a horizontal cut on the inside of the lip (lower and/or upper). Through the cut, the surgeon will place a small cannula through which extra fat will be suctioned from the lip (liposuction). The amount of sucked fat depends on the degree of lip fullness as well as the patient’s desired outcome. Once liposuction is done, the surgeon concludes the procedure by suturing the incision with resorbable stitches.

Post-operative effects & recovery after reduction cheiloplasty:

The surgeon will prescribe the appropriate medications and recommend applying ice cubes on the lips to alleviate any pain or discomfort after the lip-reduction surgery. Swelling and bruising are quite expected after surgery, but both will vanish in a few weeks. It is important that the patient take a week off work to rest and heal properly. Physical activity is not recommended during the first weeks following surgery. Resuming sports and other strenuous activities should be done upon the surgeon’s approval. In addition, the patient may experience uneasiness in eating. For this, the surgeon will recommend following a fluid diet during the first few days after surgery. The reintroduction of soft and pureed food should be done gradually until the patient is fully able to consume solid food again. The patient should also take care of their oral hygiene by rinsing their mouth with antiseptic mouthwash regularly.

Results of lip-reduction surgery:

The results of lip-reduction surgery are immediately visible and permanent. However, if the patient feels that their lips are still big, the patient can undergo the same surgery once again to reduce the size of the lips. However, if the patient does not like the outcome of thinner lips and wishes to restore their naturally large lips, options of lip-augmentation may be considered. It is important to note that restoration of full lips may be done surgically (fat grafting) or non-surgically (Botox fillers).
