Body lift : lifting surgery for sagging body contour

Body lift : what is it?

Due to radical weight loss, mainly through bariatric surgery, the body is left with stubborn fat deposits and droopy skin. This unpleasing excess may negatively affect the patient’s psyche and decrease their self-esteem. To address the issue of skin laxity, body-lift surgery is able to eliminate the sagging, reshape and define the contour of the body.

A body-lift surgery, also known as lipectomy, it reshapes and contours the figure by eliminating stubborn fatty tissues and sagging skin situated in different areas of the body. The procedure is commonly performed after substantial weight loss to reconstruct and redrawing the contour of the body. It combines different interventions depending on the treated areas (the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, hips…):

  • Upper body-lift: it includes an arm-lift, a breast lift, and liposuction of the back with bra-line back lift.
  • Lower body-lift: it includes lifting buttocks, thigh lift, hips lift, and a tummy tuck.
  • Total body-lift: it is generally performed on people who have significant extra skin in the mid, upper, and lower parts of their bodies. In the case of a total body-lift, a combination of the aforementioned techniques is employed.

Who are suitable candidates for lipectomy surgery?

Good candidates for body-lift surgery should be in good overall health and are ready to commit to a healthy diet and a workout regimen. It is also important that the patient neither smokes nor consumes alcohol before, during, and after surgery. Another prime criterion of good candidacy is having significant sagging skin.

How is body-lift surgery performed?

Before lipectomy surgery:

During the preliminary consultation, the surgeon evaluates the patient’s candidacy for the body lift procedure, assesses their overall health, examines and measures their body, and discusses their expectations and desired outcome. Finally, the surgeon has to make sure that the patient is fully aware of any possible complications related to the procedure.

During lipectomy surgery:

Body-lifting surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The duration of the surgery depends on the types and number of procedures involved, which approximately lasts from three to five hours.

The surgeon starts by creating a cut (or many) in target areas of the body. Incisions differ in length depending on the amount and location of excess skin to eliminate. Then, the sagging skin and fat deposits are respectively removed and suctioned. It is important to note that liposuction can be possibly performed in the presence of excessive amounts of fatty cells in the body. The remaining skin is then tightened and repositioned (like repositioning the belly button after a tummy tuck procedure). The surgeon concludes the procedure by suturing incisions and concealing them in the natural folds of the body. After body lift surgery, the patient will be recommended to wear a compressive garment or a bandage on the operated areas. The placement of draining tubes is also possible to empty out any fluids caused by the intervention.

Post-operative effects & recovery after body-lifting surgery:

Body-lift surgery is particularly painful because it involves more than one intervention in different areas of the body. To alleviate any pain or discomfort, the surgeon will prescribe the appropriate analgesics to make the healing process more bearable. Despite it being performed on an outpatient basis, body-lift surgery necessitates that the patient remains in the hospital for one to three days. Bruising and swelling in operated areas of the body is quite apparent after surgery, but both will fade away after a few weeks. In order to reduce the latter and maintain the newly operated shape, the patient will be requested to wear a compressive garment during the healing process. After leaving the hospital, the patient may resume work and non-strenuous daily activities after a few weeks. However, any sports or exhaustive activities should be avoided for six to eight weeks after surgery, and can only be resumed upon the surgeon’s approval.

Results of body-lift surgery:

In spite of being immediately visible, the results of body-lift surgery are permanently accomplished after one or two years. However, the patient must adopt a healthy lifestyle (through healthy diets and regular exercise) to maintain the results of body-lift surgery. In doing so, the patient will make sure that their body remains contoured and toned in the long-term.
