Gastric balloon : non-surgical weight-loss procedure

Gastric balloon: what is it?

People go to great lengths to lose excess weight and achieve better body contours. When dieting and exercising do not realize the desired outcomes, people start seeking other ways and that is when intra gastric balloon procedure comes in handy. Medical weight loss empowers them to lose weight without surgery, through changing the relationship with food, eliminating harmful eating habits, and adopting a healthier lifestyle. People actually do not only seek to wear better-fitting clothes, but are also in need of a healthier life filled with confidence.

The gastric balloon is one of many bariatric surgeries. It is one of the newer kinds of non-surgical weight-loss procedures. It aims to limit food intake amounts while making people feel fuller faster. The procedure stimulates changes that help not only with weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but also with relieving medical conditions related to being overweight, which can be potentially life-threatening, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and infertility.

Who is concerned by a gastric balloon procedure?

Good candidates for this procedure are people with a body mass index (BMI) between thirty and forty. Good candidates also include those who have not had any previous stomach or esophageal surgery before.  Gastric balloon, however, might not be the right choice for obese individuals.

Gastric balloon procedure:  How is it going work?

The gastric balloon procedure is done in the endoscopy unit and on an outpatient basis. It is performed with mild sedation and lasts from twenty to thirty minutes.

The surgeon starts by advancing a catheter (a thin tube) loaded with the intra-gastric balloon down the patient’s throat into the stomach. Next, the surgeon inserts an endoscope, which is a flexible tube with a camera attached, into that same canal. The tiny camera allows the surgeon to see the balloon as they fill it with saline.

Effects of insertion of a stomach balloon:

The patient will be discharged a few hours after the intra-gastric balloon procedure. They can have small amounts of liquid foods six hours after the intra gastric balloon procedure. Eating soft foods will start at the beginning of the second week and resuming the consumption of regular food will take place around three weeks after the insertion of the stomach balloon. The latter is left in place for up to six months and is then removed through an endoscope.

Scars after a gastric balloon intervention:

In a gastric balloon surgery, the stomach balloon is inserted orally through the esophagus and placed directly into the stomach during a quick, non-surgical procedure. The latter does not require any incisions, stitches, or scars.

Gastric balloon intervention results:

An intra gastric balloon surgery makes the patient feel full faster than usual, which in turn limits food intake. In addition, the stomach balloon slows down the time it takes to empty the stomach and changes levels of hormones that control the appetite. The patient’s weight loss depends on the changes in lifestyle habits. Yet, during the six months following a stomach balloon, it is typical to lose about ten to fifteen per cent of body weight. Indeed, the procedure helps with relieving conditions related to being overweight that are potentially life-threatening, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and reduces pain lurking in weight-bearing joints.

Advice before and after gastric balloon procedure:

Before an intragastric balloon surgery, the surgeon will examine the patient’s condition, weight, medical tests, etc. in order to establish the most appropriate method that meets their needs and expectations. The most important instructions to follow are those to follow after gastric balloon surgery. The patient should eat as slowly as possible and take 30 to 45 minutes for each meal. They should put small amounts on the plate and cut them into small pieces. The patient should take small bites, about a teaspoon, and chew them slowly. Once the mouthful is swallowed, it is advisable to wait 20 seconds to avoid vomiting. In addition, carbonated drinks (water, sodas, etc.) and effervescent drugs are strictly prohibited.
