Temporal lift : plastic surgery for eyebrow ptosis repair

What is a temporal lift surgery?

Over time, facial skin ages and turns saggy around the temple area. The latter not only drags down eye corners but also renders the face gloomy-looking and sad. In order to address the aesthetic problem of sagging skin and wrinkle formation around the temple area, temporal-lift surgery was introduced.
A temple lift, also known as temporoplasty, is a temple surgery, which can be combined with other surgical procedures like a face lift, a blepharoplasty  and a bichectomy. It aims at restoring the upper part of the face (outer eyes, outer brows, and upper cheeks) by pulling the skin around the temples.

Who are suitable candidates for temporal brow lift surgery?

Temporal surgery candidates are people who experience skin slackening and wrinkle formation in the temple area. A prime criterion for undergoing the surgery is having good overall health and being a non-smoker. In addition, temporal lifting requires that the patient have elastic skin, and is willing to undergo the surgery for corrective or aesthetic purposes. Furthermore, the patient has to set realistic expectations and be aware of possible risks and complications to the surgery. It is important to note that temporal lifting, like any other lifting procedure, is solely performed on relatively aged people. In case young adults or teenagers request undergoing the surgery, the surgeon might abstain from performing it and would recommend psychotherapeutic consultations.

How is temporal lift surgery performed?

Before Temple lift surgery:

A pre-surgical consultation with both the surgeon and the anaesthetist is important to set the objectives of the procedure, determine the patient’s psychological readiness, and review his/her medical history. To check the criteria of good candidacy, the surgeon will conduct a complete medical check-up and an upper facial examination to evaluate the patient’s cutaneous characteristics. It is also important that the patient inform their surgeon of any on-going treatments and medication they are taking. Finally, the surgeon will make sure that their patient is aware of any possible risks or complications to the procedure.

During Temporal lift surgery

A temple lift is performed on an outpatient basis under general anaesthesia. Temple surgery lasts for half an hour to two hours depending on the extent of surgery.

The surgeon starts by creating a bilateral temporal incision in the hairline above the ear. The skin is then pulled upwards, tightened, and repositioned using resorbable stitches. The remaining skin will be removed, and the incision shut.

The temporal brow lift involves minimal post-surgical scarring, as the small incision scar will be hidden in the hairline above the temple. The length and type of incision, as well as the extent of lifting, depend exclusively on the treated areas of the temple. For example, saggy skin located around the corners of the eyes requires a small incision, known as a canthoplasty. A brow lift also requires a minimal incision located at the hairline centre.

The surgeon concludes either procedure by placing a bandage on the operated area(s).

Post-operative effects & recovery after temporal lift surgery:

The patient may experience post-operative swelling and bruising in the temple area (forehead and eyelids), but both will gradually decrease after a few days. To accelerate the latter, the surgeon advises that the patient apply ice packs on bruised and swelled areas of the temple. Since the patient is expected to feel slight pain and discomfort after surgery, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics and analgesics to make the healing process easier.

In addition, the patient has to protect their temple from sunlight and overly cold or hot temperatures. That is why the patient has to take a few days off work to rest at home and avoid sunlight exposure. Besides, strenuous physical activity is strictly forbidden and can only be resumed upon the surgeon’s consent. It is important to keep the temple area moisturized after surgery by drinking a lot of water and applying hydrating creams day and night. Hair dyeing, chemical hair care, and tanning products are all to be avoided for three to four months after the temporal lift procedure.

Results of temporoplasty surgery:

Results of temporal surgery are immediately visible, yet like any other lifting surgery, stable results can only be appreciated after bruising, swelling, and scarring completely dissolve. It is also important to take care of facial skin so that temporal lifting remains intact for as long as possible.
