Labiaplasty : cosmetic surgery for hypertrophy of the labia minora

What is a labiaplasty?

Riding a bike can prove difficult for some women because of the twisting and tugging of the labia. This applies to other activities such as intercourse. Women are prone to feel irritation, itchiness, and self-consciousness concerning that area, making them opt for labiaplasty as a surgery that works on labia reduction, as well as rendering it more symmetrical and better looking.

Labiaplasty, or nymphoplasty, is a vaginal surgery that reduces the labia minora’s length. It is the most commonly performed vaginal rejuvenation procedure and it can relieve labia irritation and itching. The goal of the surgery is to reduce the labia minora in a way that they will not hang below the hair-bearing labia majora or protrude clothing. A labiaplasty can also be performed to lessen asymmetry is the case one is longer than the other, or to decrease the length of both labia.

Who are good candidates for labiaplasty?

Good candidates for labiaplasty are women with elongated labia as the excess tissue can cause discomfort or hinder normal function. For instance, some female athletes’ labia may be long enough to stick to the legs during physical activities. Other candidates may be women who opt for the procedure for aesthetic reasons as they view their inner labia to be abnormally large and/or irregular and therefore feel self-conscious about how their genitalia appears. This causes them emotional or psychological distress during intercourse or while wearing a thong or swimsuit. However, typical candidates for vaginal rejuvenation are women who have developed significant labial changes and/or tears postpartum. In some cases, candidates include young females (under the age of eighteen) with substantial irregularities.

How is labia reduction surgery performed?

Before labia surgery:

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will examine the patient’s body and particularly the vaginal area, review the patient’s medical history, do a physical exam, and take photographs for medical records. The plastic surgeon will also discuss the patient’s options and clarify all surgery aspects and inform them of likely outcomes of labiaplasty surgery.

During labia surgery:

Labia plastic surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis under general anaesthesia. The procedure lasts for one to two hours.

The trim procedure is the most common technique. The surgeon creates an incision that removes the extra tissue. This aims to reduce the labia minora and make it as symmetrical as possible. The surgeon then sews up the incision directly.

Another technique is the wedge procedure, which maintains a natural border after the surgeon removes a pie-shaped piece of tissue. Simultaneously, they can work on reducing the extra folds of the clitoral hood. Then they proceed to suturing the incision, which is usually done with absorbable stitches.

Scars and complications related to labiaplasty:

Labiaplasty incisions are typically closed with dissolvable sutures. At first, the labiaplasty scar tissue will feel firm. However, as the healing progresses, the labia skin turns softer with a limber texture. Later, the scars will not be felt nor seen.

Postoperative effects and recovery after labia plastic surgery:

Recovery after labiaplasty is typically swift and uncomplicated as the procedure is minimally invasive. It is recommended that the patient take a week off from work, during which the swelling and pain is reduced by medication and/or icing with a cold pack placed between underpants and an elastic garment, such as Spanx. Patients are advised to lie with their bottoms elevated to help reduce swelling and to put on a mini-pad that absorbs minor bleeding. Patients are allowed to resume normal activity, wear tampons, or have intercourse only after four to six weeks.

Results of labia minora reduction surgery:

Labiaplasty typically results in shorter labia minora that no longer protrude the labia majora or underpants. Most patients generally find relief after surgery as they no longer struggle with symptoms from twisting and tugging of their labia. Several studies actually affirm that labia surgery is associated with a satisfaction rate of over ninety percent.
